Sin embargo, el emparedado no se llama <em>Hillel<\/em>, sino <em>Sandwich<\/em>. Es triste pensar que el <em>sandwich<\/em> nos viene nada menos que de un pol\u00edtico. Sandwich no es nombre ni apellido. El nombre es John Montagu, el t\u00edtulo es cuarto conde de Sandwich.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1512 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.le-fort.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/condedesandwich.jpg?resize=200%2C236\" alt=\"condedesandwich\" width=\"200\" height=\"236\" \/>Este noble ingl\u00e9s vivi\u00f3 durante el siglo XVIII (equisve\u00ed-\u00ed-\u00ed en caso que tengas problemas con los n\u00fameros romanos) y detent\u00f3 una serie de cargos tales como secretario de estado, lord del almirantazgo, etc, etc. No parece haber sido de lo m\u00e1s eficiente. Se propuso el siguiente epitafio para su tumba:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jam\u00e1s alguien que ostent\u00f3 tantos cargos tuvo tan pocos logros<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Esto nos lleva a pensar que era un pol\u00edtico como los que nos adornan hoy.<\/p>\n<p>Pero vamos a lo importante. A su ludopat\u00eda (seg\u00fan la versi\u00f3n m\u00e1s difundida) o a su dedicaci\u00f3n al trabajo (seg\u00fan su bi\u00f3grafo oficial) que le imped\u00eda levantarse de la mesa debido a largu\u00edsimas horas de actividad, es que debemos la popularizaci\u00f3n de las tajaditas de animal entre dos trozos de pan. Si bien hay quien atribuye la invenci\u00f3n del Sandwich a Hillel el viejo (contempor\u00e1neo de nuestro admirado Herodes el Grande), la popularizaci\u00f3n en occidente se debe al conde de Sandwich.<\/p>\n<p>El sandwich original, entonces, era carne salada con mantequilla entre dos rebanadas de pan de molde. La carne salada es tapapecho salmuerado y cocinado. La primera menci\u00f3n del sandwich es de la d\u00e9cada de 1760.<\/p>\n<p>El sandwich pas\u00f3 de ser comida de francachelas aristocr\u00e1ticas en el siglo XVIII a ser comida m\u00e1s aristocr\u00e1tica a fines del mismo siglo y a principios del XIX. Recordemos por ejemplo los <em>finger sandwiches<\/em> victorianos. Posteriormente tuvo un crecimiento explosivo en su popularidad como una comida simple y port\u00e1til durante la revoluci\u00f3n industrial.
